The ongoing debate over the proposed Pune-Nashik semi-high-speed train route has taken a new turn with the Railway Ministry announcing a change in alignment to protect the operations of the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). Former deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal has expressed concerns about the new alignment, suggesting an alternative plan to construct a tunnel near Narayangaon to bypass GMRT.

The GMRT, a critical national facility located near Narayangaon, is the first Indian facility to detect gravitational waves and the world’s most sensitive radio telescope array. Due to its importance, the new railway alignment has been designed to safeguard GMRT’s operations from interference caused by train movements.

Despite Bhujbal’s objections, the Union Railway Ministry and Central Railway are firm on the new alignment, which will utilize existing lines and shorten the route by 60 kilometers, benefiting both pilgrims and freight transportation. Bhujbal believes that maintaining the old alignment through industrial hubs like Sinnar and Sangamner would be more beneficial for industrial growth and freight movement between Pune and Nashik.

To address concerns regarding GMRT, Bhujbal has proposed the construction of a tunnel near the facility, allowing the railway line to pass without disrupting its operations. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has assured that Bhujbal’s suggestion will be considered, emphasizing the government’s commitment to ensuring both GMRT’s preservation and the growth of Pune-Nashik industries.

Maharail, a joint venture between Railways and the state government, has prepared the Detailed Project Report for the route and believes that a minor change in alignment could solve GMRT’s concerns without significant cost increases. The government’s position remains focused on assessing the viability of Bhujbal’s proposal while prioritizing the protection of GMRT and the economic growth of the region.
